Three Miners grow their grapes at a single site - the 'Home' Block on McPherson Road which is off Earnscleugh Road, about 8km from the historic township of Clyde.
The Home Block started life as a sheep farm, and in 1982 was converted to horticulture, growing mainly stone fruit and some pip fruit. The land was purchased by Three Miners in 2000 for the purpose of establishing a vineyard.
First plantings in 2000 at this level site were 4Ha of Pinot Noir using clones 10/5, 5 and 6. There are now 14Ha of Pinot Noir planted, along with 1Ha each of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.
Cane pruning is carried out on a VSP (vertical shoot postioning) system. Row spacings are 2.4M and plant spacings are 1.4M. Drip line irrigation is fed from the Fraser water scheme, essential with the very low water retention of the soil.
Soils are well-drained Earnscleugh soil - loess or loamy silt over wind-blown alluvial schist, derived from the Fraser River. The schist in the soil profile provides good drainage, and low to medium vigour potential.
For frost-fighting overhead sprinklers are deployed, the same system as that used in the old orchards. This method was first used in the Alexandra/Earnscleugh area and has proved to be especially efficient on the grapes in spring frosts. |
